From Syracuse · about 1¾ to 2 hours

A river day trip from Syracuse.

Alexandria Bay is about 98 miles from Syracuse, a drive of about 1¾ to 2 hours straight up I-81. That's close enough to fish a morning half day and be home for dinner, or to stay one night and add a shore dinner on an island.

If you live in or near Syracuse, the Thousand Islands are closer than a lot of people think. You get on I-81 north and stay on it. In about two hours you're in Alexandria Bay, on the St. Lawrence River, looking at Boldt Castle from the town docks.

That short drive changes how you can plan. You don't need a long weekend. You can do one great day, or one easy night away.

Can you fish the Thousand Islands as a day trip from Syracuse?

Yes. A half-day fishing trip with Laurentian Tours runs about 4 hours, so a day trip works well. Here's a simple plan.

The one-day plan

  1. Leave Syracuse early. It's about 98 miles on I-81 north. Give yourself about 2 hours.
  2. Meet the boat. Most trips leave from Bonnie Castle Marina, Boathouse 3, in Alexandria Bay. Captain Richard Drake confirms the start time when you book.
  3. Fish for about 4 hours. Smallmouth bass, northern pike, walleye, and perch, depending on the season.
  4. Lunch in town and a look around. Walk to the waterfront and watch the boats. From mid-May to mid-October you can also take a boat over to Boldt Castle on Heart Island.
  5. Drive home. You're back in Syracuse in time for dinner.

The overnight plan

Stay one night and you can book the classic local trip: a half day plus shore dinner. You fish for about 4 hours. Then Captain Richard cooks your catch on an island, with BLTs, salad with Thousand Island dressing, salt potatoes, French toast with local maple syrup, and campfire coffee. It's a river guide tradition that goes back to the late 1800s. You won't want to rush the drive home after that.

Alexandria Bay has hotels, motels, inns, and cottage rentals. Summer weekends book up early.

When should you stay the night before?

Two trips start early enough that the night before makes sense.

  • Duck and goose hunts. A guided waterfowl hunt starts before sunrise and runs about 6 to 7 hours. Leaving Syracuse in the middle of the night and then sitting in a cold blind is a hard way to start. Sleep close to the river instead.
  • Ice fishing. Ice fishing trips usually run from 7 to 11 AM. In January and February, I-81 north of Syracuse can be snowy and slow. Coming up the night before takes the stress out of it.

For hunts and ice trips, Captain Richard confirms the meeting spot when you book.

How is the St. Lawrence different from Oneida Lake?

Syracuse anglers have good fishing close to home. Oneida Lake is about ten miles north of the city. The New York State DEC (opens in a new tab) says it's best known for walleye and yellow perch, and bass are its next most popular fish. It's a shallow lake, with an average depth of 22 feet. If you want walleye on a weeknight, Oneida is hard to beat.

The St. Lawrence is a different kind of trip.

  • It's a big, moving river. The current, the deep channels, and the rocky shoals change how fish act and where they hold.
  • Smallmouth bass are the main catch. DEC's St. Lawrence River page (opens in a new tab) calls smallmouth the most commonly caught fish on the river. Pike, walleye, and perch round it out.
  • Musky live here. In the fall, Laurentian Tours runs 5-hour musky trips that troll big lures along the drop-offs.
  • The scenery is part of it. You fish around islands with summer cottages on them, with Boldt Castle in view and big ships passing in the channel.
  • You don't need a boat or gear. The guide brings the boat, rods, reels, tackle, bait, and life jackets in every size.

So it isn't a swap for your home lake. It's a day you'd plan around.

What's the best time of year to come up from Syracuse?

Since the drive is short, you can come back in more than one season. Here's how the year breaks down on the New York side of the river.

WhenWhat's good
May to mid-JunePike and walleye. Their seasons open May 1. Bass fishing is closed until June 15, even catch and release.
Mid-June to AugustSmallmouth bass, pike, perch, and shore dinners. Boldt Castle is open. Sunset cruises.
September to NovemberFall pike and bass, plus musky. Late September through November is prime musky time. Bass close after November 30.
Fall into winterDuck and goose hunts. Check DEC for this year's waterfowl seasons.
About January into MarchIce fishing for perch, pike, and walleye, if the ice is safe.

Seasons and limits can change, so check the current NYSDEC regulations (opens in a new tab) before you go.

Trip ideas for Syracuse groups

First-timers. Most of Captain Richard's customers have never fished with a guide. Nobody expects you to know how to tie a knot or set a hook. A half day costs $475 for one person and $550 for four.

Friends. A group of buddies can split a full day of fishing (7 hours, so pack a lunch), or add a fall musky trip. See the guys' fishing trip page for more ideas.

Families. Kids are welcome, and life jackets come in every size. A half day is a good length for young kids. If your whole family is getting together, the family reunion page shows how to plan for more than 6 people with a second guide and boat.

What to know before you go

  • License. Anglers 16 and older need a New York fishing license. The same license you use on Oneida Lake works on the New York side of the river.
  • Booking. Call or text 315-836-5798 (texting is best), or use the form at /#book. There's no deposit, and nothing is paid online.
  • Weather. If the weather turns bad, Captain Richard reschedules.
  • Prices. Every trip and group size is on the rates page.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Alexandria Bay from Syracuse?

It's about 98 miles. The drive takes about 1¾ to 2 hours, almost all of it on I-81 north.

Can we fish in the morning and be home for dinner?

Yes. A half-day trip is about 4 hours. With about 2 hours of driving each way, you can be back in Syracuse by evening.

Does my New York fishing license from home cover the St. Lawrence?

Yes, on the New York side of the river. A New York license does not cover the Ontario side, and anglers 16 and older need one.

Should we drive up the morning of a duck hunt?

It's better to stay the night before. Hunts start before sunrise, and ice fishing trips usually start at 7 AM, so sleeping near Alexandria Bay is much easier.

What happens if it rains on our day?

Fishing in light rain is often fine, so bring rain gear. If the weather is bad, Captain Richard will reschedule your trip.
